Musical Motivation Monday – Week Two

Musical Motivation Monday – by Heather Stewart

“They won’t be fools or be victims Or fall along the way.
They fight for life,
these large strong birds,
They won’t let it pass them by.
Examples in our life should be.
To fly where Eagles fly.”

-excerpt from “Where Eagles Fly” by Helen E. Payne Spencer, Cherokee

Here we are, beginning another week of our journey. I have heard walkers say, “I’m not walking much” or “my numbers aren’t good”. Even I fell into this trap of self doubt when confronted by the millions of steps that Team Endurance shared (Hooray Team Endurance – you guys are doing great things). Then I found myself reminding people, every step counts. Do what YOU can. Don’t go out there and hurt yourself trying to increase your numbers. This isn’t a race against fellow walkers, we are walking together. If you can only walk around your house, then do it. If you can walk around your place of business then do it. If you have time to go to the park or walk around the mall or the grocery store then do it. That trip to the restroom, that trip to the microwave they all count. It’s all about getting the word out and EVERY STEP COUNTS!
All week I have thought of us as eagles, soaring, going above and beyond to share with the world about Ankylosing Spondylitis (A.S.). As the poem by Helen E. Payne Spencer says, we fight for life we won’t let life pass us by and we are the examples for others. So as you walk, hold your head up and keep your shoulders back. Be proud of what you are doing, you are walking for those who have difficulty walking, you walk to bring awareness to something many don’t know exists, you walk as an example. You are the eagle! You are the one soaring to new heights and your steps, all of your steps, count!

For some of us (myself include) holding our heads up is impossible due to fusion. We may not appear to be holding our heads up-but know that in our minds we are as straight as an arrow !!

Hi Joy! Very important topic that you bring up. AS can cause many people to fuse with a forward stooped position making it impossible to life one’s head. I like that although we may not be able to literally hold our heads up – we figuratively we hold them very high! – Jenna
