A Reason To Walk – I Challenge Us To Move!

My name is Jenna Visscher. I am an artist, a blogger, and a community advocate for Ankylosing Spondylitis awareness and a health activist for research for a cure. I also develop community projects and speak about chronic illness and chronic pain.

I hope you’ll consider adding your steps to our challenge! If it’s 100 or 100,000 – we welcome your contribution. The steps are logged through our website (see this page), and the results are tallied in the grand finale on May 31st 2016.

ricky-twibbonRicky White – Vice Chair

Hi, I’m Ricky. I’ve been a part of Walk Your AS Off since 2012. Having been a part of other teams in the past, I finally made the jump and captained my own team, Making Trax, in 2015. I haven’t looked back since.

In the beginning of 2007 I began to suffer with back pain and Sacroiliac Joint pain. Which progressed over the next 3 years. And in April 2010 I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Living by the motto: “Ankylosing Spondylitis like all chronic conditions becomes your life, but this doesn’t mean your life has to become your condition”. I strive to work as a positive advocate for those with this incurable chronic illness.

I’m always welcoming to those newly diagnosed and happy to assist in providing appropriate and accurate information. You can email on ricky.white@walkasone.org. I’m always looking for new members to join my team Making Trax. Check out our team page here!

Heatherstewart2Heather Stewart – Sponsorship and Fundraising Director

Heather Stewart was a state champion baton twirler and champion dancer. During graduate school she started experiencing chronic pain & fatigue but even with a family history of AS, she was told people of color could not have AS. After seeing her grandfather’s Rheumatologist she was finally diagnosed.

Heather channels her active mind with floral arrangement, crocheting, scrapbooking, volunteering, singing in a barbershop chorus, reading, spending time with family, playing with her dogs and quilting. Heather Stewart is the author/coach for our Musical Motivation posts. She is a Walk Ambassador & Team Captain of The Rockin’ Weebles! You can reach her at heather.stewart@walkasone.org.

WalkASOneCarrie Kellenberger – Communications and Membership Director

Hi Everyone. I’ve been involved with Walk Your AS Off since early 2014. Last year I joined the WYASO team officially to assist Jenna with the website and social media aspects of our walk. It was a fantastic year for me and I was so excited by all of the new people that I met during the walk, her dream soon became my dream, so here I am!

I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylisits in 2009. As a Canadian expat living in Taiwan, it has been really hard to deal with the challenges of navigating a health system that is not in my mother tongue. That said, I feel that I get great health care here and I am thankful for my medical team. I hope that some of the information that I’m sharing with my friends in Asia help others who are struggling to find support over here. You can reach me at carrie.kellenberger@walkasone.org. I am captain of The Walking Spondies, which is an international team of walkers. We are always looking for new members to join. You can join us by signing up on our team page at http://walkyourasoff.com/teams/the-walking-spondies/.

Kelly - TwibbonKelly O’Neil – Treasurer

I started walking with Walk Your AS Off in 2013, just a few months after being diagnosed with AS. After dealing with unexplained pain and fatigue for five years (which is actually considered quite short for an AS diagnosis!), it was such a relief to find a community of people who understood what I was dealing with. Even better, I got to meet people like Jenna and the rest of the Walk AS One board, who were taking action to make a difference in the lives of people with AS and increase awareness of the condition so diagnosis can happen sooner! I am very excited to be involved as we make or way to Mars and beyond.

I walk with the wonderful Canadian Spondylitis Association team, the AS Busters. I encourage any Canadians (or Canadians-at-heart…) to join us this year via http://walkyourasoff.com/teams/a-s-busters-the-team-of-the-canadian-spondylitis-association/

You can also email me on: kelly.oneil@walkasone.org.
