Hi Everyone! My name is Carrie Kellenberger and I’m Team Captain of The Walking Spondies. I thought I’d take the time to update you all on what our team got up to on World AS Day, which is always held on the first Saturday of May each year. This year, World AS Day fell on Saturday, May 7th, and we decided to host our second Walk Your AS Off team event at Da’An Forest Park in Taipei. This was our second team walking event for 2016, and we decided to host a potluck picnic in the park for the afternoon… Read More »World AS Day in Taiwan with The Walking Spondies
Hi folks! I’m Carrie Kellenberger, and I’m Team Captain of The Walking Spondies in Taiwan. We’re an international team comprised of walkers from Canada, the US, the UK, Taiwan, and Australia. We held our first official Walk Your AS Off/WalkASOne event on Thursday, April 16th at CKS Memorial Hall in Taipei. This was also our first organized team walk, and we chose to host a night walk at the suggestion of one of our team runners, David Mitchell. Thank you for the fantastic idea, David, and thank you for getting there early to track the time and distance. Setting personal goals and… Read More »The Walking Spondies Night Walker April Event Recap
After circling the globe, then reaching the moon, we have headed off towards worlds unknown – MARS! We haven’t shared much how big this goal actually happens to be – honestly we were afraid to freak you out or discourage you. As Jennifer shared in a blog post last year, Imagine what we are doing – and it may help you understand the thinking behind such a bold move. So – here is the scoop… We need approximately 80 Billion Steps to get to Mars and this is why we’ve set a time frame of ten years to accomplish this.… Read More »How The Numbers Stack Up
This week has been rough due to a lot of personal stuff going on but on the good side all this running here and there did lead to a pretty awesome step count week. Thanks to loads of activity with loads of stress, my body aches EVERYWHERE. Then there is the weather. Almost 80 today and they are calling for flurries Wednesday in the very early morning hours or as other people still consider it, night time. Humidity, no humidity. Cool day, warm day. Rain clouds but no rain. Of course it has been great weather for the Cherry Blossoms… Read More »Tiara's Tuesday Talk – Step Conversions
I spent most of Sunday on my butt and whilst there I was hemming and hawing over what to write. I mean, I feel like I need to give 5 days of thought, 1 day to chill about it and about an hour to actually type something (if that…). One thing that came to mind and I kind of played around with was this. ↑ errrr…. More like ↗. Never give up. I’m stubborn. I know those who know me well are hardly shocked by this revelation but for everyone else just play along like it’s shocking. Somewhere, somehow, someone… Read More »Tiara's Tuesday Talk – The Rewards Of Not Giving Up!
Tiara’s Tuesday Talk – by Sara Sheibley Here we are at and a lot of us are hitting our stride, figuring out pedometers and just simply WALKING! Isn’t this exciting??? Okay so our feet may not be finding as exciting as we are but hey, a little foot rub and they’ll be thanking you for it! Last year for the first few weeks of the walk I concentrated on assistive devices to aide in walking and things to do to relieve aches and pains. I was in a place at that time where I really couldn’t walk well. Actually…… Read More »Tiara's Tuesday Talk – Hitting Our Stride
Musical Motivation Monday – by Heather Stewart WYASO2014 to Houston, come in Houston. HOUSTON we have satellites! All of our lives we are surrounded by people; family, friends, co-workers, associates. We even have phrases like “circle of friends” to describe some of them. We place ourselves in the center and they surround us. Over the years some relationships burn fast and hot, others a slow burn while even others are strong and constant. They say that everyone comes into your life for a reason, the strong constant people, they are our satellites. You know who they are, they are with you… Read More »Monday Motivation – We Have Satellites!
Musical Motivation Monday – by Heather Stewart Greetings Earthlings! It’s Monday and we are just breaking orbit on our journey to Mars! That’s right, MARS! Last year we made it from the Earth to the Moon, this year we are beginning a longer walk. We don’t expect to make it to Mars in the next few weeks but we will get there eventually. So, everyone wants to know why Mars? The journey to Mars represents the average time it takes for someone with Spondylitis to be diagnosed and sadly that average is 10 years. This is one of the reasons why… Read More »Musical Motivation Monday – Hop Aboard The Starship WYASO2014!
We have had a number of our walkers ask us if we could include their dog in our walk! The answer was, “of course” but then I learned that people wanted to count the steps of their furry friends and that took us some time to figure out if that was something we could, should, would do. But in the mean time we heard very powerful testimonials like these: “One of our fellow As family members thought about ending her life she had everything ready and in place. We had been talking about my service dog and how much he… Read More »Paws For Our Cause
Walk Your A.S. Off announces the largest endeavor to date – a continuation of their steps into the unknown and a place no one has ventured. Thousands of people with the chronic disease Ankylosing Spondylitis and the family of related diseases will take their mission to what some might say is an unobtainable goal – the planet Mars! In year one, founder Jennifer Visscher, thought a million steps was a lofty goal but she quickly saw an outpouring of support from fellow ASers and their friends and family, and realized that her vision needed to be larger. The community rallied… Read More »Walk Your A.S. Off has their sights set on MARS!
